>>Vikings and Normans
3 avril 2006
When the Romans left Great Britain and Gaul in the fifth century, Barbarians started invading Europe :(Angles and Saxons in England, Franks in Gaul....). The Vikings lived in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. From the eighth century they went to different parts of Europe and even North America in their longships or drakkars. They went up the rivers and stole valuable things and killed people.
In 911, a French King called Charles-le-Simple gave the Vikings some land to settle and stop their pillage. This land was called Normandy. In the eleventh century, Guillaume, Duke of Normandy, was a friend of the English king Edward the Confessor. This King wanted Guillaume to become king after him but his brother-in-law Harold was crowned. Guillaume had to go and fight in England, in Hastings, in 1066. Guillaume was called William the Conqueror. We can see his story on the Bayeux Tapestry (Bayeux is a town in Normandy).
